Systematic Theology I: Faith and Purpose

ACA401

This subject explores the sources and method of theology, the topic of revelation, and the subject of God, including the Trinity and divine attributes using both a historical and constructive approach. We will focus particular attention on theological method and God in relation to suffering.

Jesus and the Gospels: Gospel of Mark

BIB540

The Gospel of Mark has been a storm center of historical and theological research now for the better part of a century. Its place at the cornerstone of the recorded traditions about Jesus has attracted the interest of the historian, and its uniquely sanguine portrayal of Jesus attracts the interest of those among the faithful for whom the humanity of our Lord remains a matter of settled conviction. The theologian will be interested in Mark’s distinctive sacramental interpretation of certain events in Jesus’ life, and their implications for Church unity.

Our interest is other — we will want to know how Mark composes his story to generate such a rich and varied picture of Jesus. What are his storytelling strategies, and to what uses are they put? How might Mark’s narrative have served the religious and social needs of his community? For as historians, as believers, as theologians, must learn before all else to read Mark’s gospel against the backdrop of the real, concrete life of his church.

Systematic Theology II: Christ and Salvation

THE501

Using Scripture and the church’s historic theological wisdom, this subject is a study of Jesus Christ’s person and salvific work, and the elements of salvation including justification, sanctification and glorification. It is also a study of anthropology from a biblical, theological, and contextual point of view.

Historical Books of the Old Testament

BIB523

Many of the Old Testament books are dedicated to the history of Israel from the time of conquest through to exile. This subject will examine the books of Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, Ezra and Nehemiah—a vast array of books and times! It will also specifically investigate the major events and people in Old Testament history.

Systematic Theology III: Pneumatology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology

THE503

This subject explores the biblical foundations, historical development, and the contemporary relevance of the doctrines of Pneumatology (the Holy Spirit), Ecclesiology (the Church), and Eschatology (Final Purposes). There will be a special emphasis on interpretations of eschatology in the light of the scriptural witness and the contexts of the church’s faith and mission today.

Acts of the Apostles

BIB541

This subject presents an overview of the birth and expansion of the early church set with its historical and cultural contexts. The subject explores key themes with a focus upon the role of the Holy Spirit. Students are encouraged to apply biblical passages to modern Pentecostal context, enhancing their analytical skills.

Biblical Ethics

THE504

In an era of moral relativism, Christians should stand out as moral beacons. In fact, however, the Church is often seen not as a community of love but rather, as a legalistic and hypocritical institution. This unit helps students to think through how they go about making ethical decisions. It argues against legalism and sets up a theological method of approaching ethics that prioritises grace and the power of the Spirit.

World Religion

CCM508

Explore Christianity in the wider scope, and examine the belief systems of other religions in order to effectively explain the bible and theological concepts in relation to diverse perspectives.

Foundations of Pastoral Ministry: Caring for Souls

MIN401

This subject addresses the various aspects of the pastoral ministry with a special focus on pastoral care. The nature and necessity of calling, the measure of ministry success, and caring for yourself and others will be explored. Students will explore contemporary pastoral models that connect academic reflection with the real world.

Christian Spirituality: Spiritual Formation

MIN102

This subject provides a preliminary introduction to Christian Spiritual Formation – which we will initially define as “the process of being formed towards Christlikeness for the sake of others.” Developing this definition will necessarily involve consideration of the work that only the Holy Spirit can do in the transformation towards Christlikeness, differentiating spiritual formation (focusing on who we are) as separate from but as having implications for moral formation (focusing on what we do). We will also consider and practice classical practices that have proven effective in partnering with the Holy Spirit, moving us away from patterns of self-destruction (sin) towards patterns supportive of and reflecting righteousness.

Discipleship: Spiritual Direction

MIN509

This subject explores the foundations of discipleship towards Christlikeness, towards developing basic understanding and resources to serve as an informal spiritual director for persons seeking to discern the ways that God is present and at work in their lives. You will critically analyze how different phases of life and spiritual disciplines influence discipleship, preparing you to effectively mentor and guide others in their faith journey.

Pneumatology (Advanced)

THE503

This is an intensive study on the Holy Spirit, focusing on the biblical foundations, the historical issues, and the contemporary relevance of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit.

Independent Guided Research

RES500

This subject allows students to formulate a research question relative to their approved topic of research and produce a clearly expressed, well-structured and well-argued research essay.
